Data Characteristics (What are the properties of data that students work with?)
- Aggregate – a property of data in which the information is summed up as a value and/or pattern; meant to display how data points are located relative to each other
- Context – the multilayered circumstances (personal, local, societal) in which data is created and/or used; must be consistently considered when examining data
- Inference – a statement about the general population based on the data samples; can be formal (complemented by statistical tests) or informal
- Measures – the components that precede the creation of data; ie. the investigative question and the data collection plan
- Variability – the difference between data points that arises as a result of various factors
- Visualization – the pictorial or graphical representation of data
Data Themes (What are the things that students do when interacting with data?)
- Communications – the act of transmitting information about the data
- Ethics – the qualities of justness and fairness applied to the creation, analysis, and communication of data
- Evaluation – the act of assessing the appropriateness, effectiveness, and justness of various characteristics and practices used to create, analyze, and communicate data
- Methods – the investigative steps in collecting and analyzing data
- Technology – the tools used in the creation, analysis, and communication of data
